According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Dallas has maintained communication with Rex Ryan regarding their coaching vacancy, as mentioned during a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.

Schefter initially announced on ESPN’s Super Bowl countdown show that Mike Zimmer had been hired, but Ryan has since indicated that a contract has not been finalized, suggesting that he remains a contender for the position.

Ryan interviewed for the defensive coordinator position with Dallas as part of their search to replace Dan Quinn. This marks his second consecutive offseason interviewing for such a role, following his candidacy with the Broncos in 2023. Despite his extensive experience, particularly leading the Ravens’ defense from 2005 to 2008, Ryan has not held a coaching position since his tenure with the Bills ended in 2016.

While serving as an ESPN analyst, Ryan has not been linked to many NFL coaching opportunities. The ongoing communication between him and the Cowboys, who reportedly held him in high regard after his interview, is noteworthy. Dallas seeks to address defensive shortcomings that contributed to their recent playoff exit, whether through the potential hiring of Ryan, Zimmer, or another candidate.

Zimmer, who was let go by the Vikings in 2021, brings considerable coaching experience, including seven seasons as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. His familiarity with owner Jerry Jones and the organization makes him a compelling option for Mike McCarthy’s staff, but competition for the position persists, indicating that Ryan is still in contention for a return to coaching where his NFL career began.
