Super Bowl LVIII Marks Historic Break: No Alabama or Auburn Players Since 2003 as SEC Faces Uncharted Territory

“Super Bowl LVIII this Sunday may mark a significant shift, as it could be the first NFL championship game without a participant from Alabama or Auburn since January 26, 2003. In Super Bowl XXXVII, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers emerged victorious against the Oakland Raiders with neither team featuring an alumnus from Alabama or Auburn on the field. Despite their absence, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) boasts a strong representation, with 22 players from current SEC schools among the 106 active roster players.

Leading the SEC contingent are Florida and Georgia, each contributing four players. Notably, former Mobile prep stars, running back La’Mical Perine from Theodore and Kadarius Toney from Blount, represent the Florida Gators in this year’s Super Bowl.

It’s worth noting that six players from Oklahoma, which will join the SEC in the 2024 season, contribute to the Big 12’s total of 15 players on the active rosters. Oklahoma has consistently led in former player representation for two consecutive Super Bowls.

Among the 106 active-roster players, nine did not enter the NFL from an NCAA FBS program, showcasing the diversity of college backgrounds. The Power 5 conferences contribute significantly, with the Big Ten having 19 players, the Pac-12 with 12, and the ACC with nine.

Fifteen teams have at least one player on the active roster of both Super Bowl teams, including Middle Tennessee and Western Michigan.

While the possibility exists for Alabama, Auburn, or both to have an alumnus on the field this year, Kansas City’s offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho, an Auburn alumnus, has returned to practice after a quadriceps injury. Additionally, defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs from Alabama is on the practice squad, presenting an opportunity for elevation to active status.

The list of players with Alabama football roots on the rosters of the Super Bowl LVIII teams includes notable names from both the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, showcasing the strong presence of talent with ties to the state.”
