Julian Okwara’s tenure with the Detroit Lions has come to an end after four seasons that failed to meet expectations. The Philadelphia Eagles announced his signing on Wednesday.
Okwara’s struggles were evident last season when he was released late and then relegated to the practice squad. Despite the Lions’ playoff appearances, he was not promoted to the active roster. Following the season’s conclusion, he was not offered a futures deal, making him a street free agent eligible to sign with any team, including the Lions.
Selected in the third round of the 2020 draft from Notre Dame, Okwara was initially seen as a promising pass rusher with ideal physical attributes. However, injuries plagued his college career and continued to impact his performance in Detroit. In 38 games for the Lions, he managed just nine sacks and 16 quarterback hits, with only two sacks in nine games last season.
