Breaking News: New York Yankees Have Finally Signed Their Top Target

The New York Yankees, known for their propensity to sign top free agents, appear unlikely to make any more significant moves this offseason.

Yankees 'hellbent on being a champion' as spring training opens

During Sunday’s spring training game, veteran Yankees analyst Jack Curry discussed the potential pursuit of either Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery, the two prominent pitchers remaining in free agency. Curry highlighted that the Yankees are already exceeding the luxury tax threshold. Therefore, a contract for Snell, rumored to be around $30 million annually, would effectively cost the team over $60 million per year. Given this financial constraint, Curry expressed skepticism about the Yankees entering the Snell or Montgomery sweepstakes.

Curry posed a rhetorical question, pondering whether Snell, priced at $30 million, should be considered a $63 million pitcher when considering the financial implications for the team. He suggested that such a hefty price tag might be challenging for the Yankees to justify. Despite the team’s ongoing efforts to enhance their roster, Curry believes they are unlikely to heavily pursue Snell or Montgomery.

While the Yankees have been linked to Snell for some time, team owner Steinbrenner recently expressed dissatisfaction with the starting rotation, leaving the door slightly ajar for further acquisitions.

Both Snell and Montgomery are among agent Scott Boras’ notable unsigned clients. Boras is awaiting offers that meet his clients’ salary expectations. Even if the Yankees retain interest, they likely hope for a reduction in asking price before seriously considering adding either pitcher to their roster.
