NFL Free Agency Updates: Why Buffalo Bills Signed Out Veteran Jordan Poyer to Miami Dolphins

A key veteran of the Buffalo Bills’ defense has found a new team within the division. Former Bills safety Jordan Poyer has reportedly reached an agreement on a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins, as per ESPN Insider Adam Schefter.

Additionally, the Dolphins have reportedly secured pass rusher Shaq Barrett with a signing on Tuesday.

Poyer was released by the Bills on Friday as part of their efforts to manage salary cap constraints before entering free agency. Alongside Poyer, the Bills also parted ways with center Mitch Morse, cornerbacks Siran Neal and Tre’Davious White, running back Nyheim Hines, and receiver Deonte Harty.

Joining a list of former Bills finding new destinations, outside linebacker Leonard Floyd has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, while receiver Gabe Davis has committed to a three-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

During his tenure in Orchard Park since joining the Bills in 2017, Poyer established himself as one of the premier safeties in the league. Over seven seasons with Buffalo, he amassed impressive statistics including 22 interceptions, 48 passes defended, eight forced fumbles, 11 sacks, and 682 tackles. While his performance saw a slight decline in 2023 with no interceptions and only one forced fumble, Poyer still contributed significantly with 100 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits last season.

Poyer was highly regarded among Bills fans for his role in shaping the team’s culture since his arrival in 2017, alongside safety Micah Hyde and head coach Sean McDermott. However, sentiments may shift when he faces the Bills as a member of the Dolphins at least twice next season. Nonetheless, his impact in helping transform the Bills into a consistent playoff contender will not be forgotten.
